About the Author

FRANCIS POLANSKY, M.D.

Dr. Polansky grew up in Prague, Czech Republic. Soon after graduating from Charles University Medical School in Prague in 1978, he escaped from the communist regime of the former Czechoslovakia and came to the United States to begin his postgraduate training.

He started his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1979 and within few months, he fell in love with the intricacies and challenges of infertility diagnosis and treatment. He decided at that time to sub-specialize in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI).

It was at that point that he realized that there was a lack of a unified scientific approach to infertility investigation. There seemed to be almost as many different ideas about infertility as there were physicians treating infertile couples. Wondering whether there was a way to logically organize infertility investigation, Dr. Polansky started to develop a framework of a systematic approach to infertility.

After finishing his OB/GYN residency at Stanford University in 1983, Dr. Polansky spent an additional two years at Stanford sub-specializing in REI. He finished his Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellowship in 1985 and remained at Stanford University as a teaching faculty for another two years. During this time, he co-founded the Stanford In Vitro Fertilization Clinic.

In the fall of 1987, he ventured out to start Nova IVF clinic. Currently, he is a director of Bay IVF Center in Palo Alto, CA where he has continued to provide advanced reproductive treatments for his patients and education for physicians in OB/GYN residency training.

For more than 30 years, he has continued to refine his understanding of infertility trying to develop the most logical way of addressing the needs of infertile couples. The Fertility Assessment Algorithm™ in this book is the product of his research, teaching, and "hands-on" patient care.

Dr. Polansky was board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1986 and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in 1988. In 1986 he received the "Outstanding Professor of the Teaching Faculty, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Stanford University" award.
